Travel Brochure of the Body Systems

Introduction:

You have been hired as a travel consultant to design a luxury tour through the Human Body Systems.  Before you can collect your fee from the Anatomy Travel Bureau, you must produce a brochure.  The owner of the travel bureau, Mr. Seymore Sphincter, has informed you that in order to win the contract you must highlight the trendy spots, the exciting activities, and the imports and exports of the areas.  For insurance considerations you must also discreetly mention any possible dangers or special precautions that tourists might encounter in visiting these systems.  At the end of your brochure you must include a section stating how each of the four body systems work together to maintain homeostasis.  Your world body tour should include visits to at least three of the following systems:

1.                  Digestive/Excretory

2.                  Respiratory

3.                  Circulatory

4.                  Nervous

Format

·                    Trifold brochure paper

·                    4 systems will have 1 section each, An explanation how these systems interact will be one section, with the remaining section as the cover.

·                    You may use drawings, computer graphics, photos of actual organs, pictures from magazines, journals or books to help in your advertisement of each system. In fact you may also use cartoons, diagrams etc. to help in your description.  You are required to include at least one hand-made depiction of one of the organs or organ systems.

·                     Whenever possible, type or WRITE NEATLY all written parts of your brochure.  Let your imagination run wild!

·                    This project is worth 52 points with 10 points going for neatness and creativity.

Systems Objectives (14 points for each of three systems)

Note: If you decide to include visits to all four systems only the first three in your brochure will be graded.

Digestive/Excretory Systems

OBJECTIVES:

  1. List the parts and organs of the digestive system that food passes through and give their functions.
  2. Discuss the importance of the liver and pancreas in digestion.
  3. Describe the structure of villi and their function on a molecular level.
  4. Define excretion and list the organs involved in this process.
  5. On a molecular level, explain in detail how a nephron functions.

VOCABULARY TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PAMPHLET

salivary glands, esophagus, stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, small intestine, villi, large intestine, peristalsis, pepsin, hydrochloric acid, bile, digestive enzymes, pH, Excretion, kidney, nephron, Bowman’s capsule, glomerulus, filtration, reabsorption

Respiratory System

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify the structure and function of the parts of the respiratory system.
  2. Describe what happens between alveoli and the capillaries.  Use detail when describing the exchange of gases, including which gases are involved and where they travel in the body.

VOCABULARY TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PAMPHLET

Alveoli, gas exchange (list the gases involved), trachea, bronchi, bronchiole, larynx, pharynx, lung, respiration, inhalation, exhalation, cilia, diaphragm

Circulatory System

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify types of blood vessels and list the functions of the circulatory system.
  2. Describe the components of blood (red blood cells, white blood cells etc.).
  3. Describe in detail the molecular mechanisms of oxygen exchange at the cellular level.

VOCABULARY TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PAMPHLET

Artery, vein, capillary, red blood cells, hemoglobin, white blood cells, platelets, plasma, oxygenated blood, deoxygenated blood

Nervous System

OBJECTIVES:

  1. List the parts and organs of the nervous system and give their functions.
  2. Describe the regions of the brain, including what functions each performs.
  3. Explain how an impulse is transmitted and list the pathway of a stimulus and response.

VOCABULARY TO BE INCLUDED IN THE PAMPHLET

Neuron, dendrite, axon, synapse, central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, somatic, autonomic, sympathetic, reflex, cerebrum, cerebellum, medulla oblongata

**Make sure your name and period are on both the brochure and the rubric and they are stapled together when you turn your project in.

This project will be the only activity for this category of your grade.  Please turn it in complete and on time.  Use the rubric to make sure you have included all necessary elements in your brochure before you hand it in.  Also, any brochures found including plagiarized material will receive a score of 0, so make sure all statements are in your own words.
