Biology ‘Quest’: Immune, Nervous, Urinary, & Muscle
Systems and the Senses
Directions: Answer the 6 questions on a separate piece
of paper. Be specific & detailed in
your responses! Answer in complete
sentences.
- Immune
System: Our bodies are highly specialized in
that they are able to fight off many toxins/foreign objects by several
specialized processes. You
roll-played immune responses one day during class. Please describe at least one immune
response pathway and include in your description the unique role of antibodies.
CA Standard 10b: Students know the role of antibodies
in the body’s response to infection.
- Nervous
System: Our nervous system is able to interpret
incoming information and then direct a response appropriately. Highlight the steps involved in getting
tapped on the shoulder by a friend.
Be sure to discuss the role/meaning of sensory neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons.
CA Standard 9e: Students know the roles of sensory
neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons in sensation, thought, & response.
- Urinary
System: The kidneys play a crucial role. We roll-played the unique pathway of the
urinary system. Please describe the
main function of the kidneys
as well as trace the pathway of a molecule flowing through the urinary
system – starting at the renal artery and ending up in the urine.
CA Standard 9g: Students know the homeostatic role
of the kidneys.
- Muscles:
Humans have three types of muscles.
One muscle type is specifically designed for “voluntary” movement,
as in voluntary muscle contractions.
Please list this unique muscle type and highlight the process of a
muscle contraction. Be sure to
address the unique roles of actin
and myosin.
CA Standard 9h: Students know the basis of muscle
contraction, including the roles of actin, myosin, Calcium, and ATP.
- Senses:
We completed a lab on the senses.
Touch, taste, site, and smell were all investigated during this
lab. Please describe four lab stations
you completed that tested each of the above 4 listed senses. (The sense of sound was not tested in
this lab).
CA Standard 9b: Students know the nervous system
mediates communication between different parts of the body & the body’s
interactions with the environment.
